A thyroid ultrasound is commonly utilized to assess for nodules or enlargement of the thyroid gland. This imaging technique provides valuable information about the structure and possible abnormalities within the thyroid tissue. By visualizing the thyroid, healthcare providers can identify the presence of nodules, which are lumps within the gland that can vary in size and composition. It can also help determine if there is a general enlargement of the thyroid, known as goiter.

This use is particularly important as thyroid nodules are relatively common and while most are benign, the ultrasound can guide further evaluation and management decisions.
